About the course

This course is designed to help you get started building your Family Tree. It will introduce you to the fundamentals of modern day genealogy record keeping, research, and data management. You should be ready to begin building a verified personal family tree at the conclusion of this course.

The class “meets” weekly, every Tuesday evening from 7:00pm – 8:30pm, for 4 weeks via Microsoft TEAMS or Zoom. Inclusive dates for the next class are:  October 13 thru November 3, 2026.

All course materials are provided through the tutor LMS course website lessons. All assignments are submitted as digital file uploads using links provided in the corresponding week’s course materials. 

A course Certificate of Completion will be issued to each participate who attends all four weekly online meetings and submits the weekly assignments.

What will you learn?

1. Where do I start?  This session focuses on learning about gathering home sources and oral histories, documenting lineage and family details using stardard genealogical forms, and establishing/organizing a system for storing documents and images.
2. What’s missing?  This session examines how to go about answering the question What do I need to learn about my family lineage? through use of the Research Process.
3. Where do I find the answers? In this session we begin looking at the various types of institutional genealogical sources, especially focusing on vital records and censuses. Participants will learn how to locate sources, analyze records, and record results of their research. 
4. How do I safeguard and share my family tree discoveries?  The final session of this 4-part series looks at the use of genealogical software and internet platforms to search for information and preserve your family tree discoveries online.
